Underwater Paradises: Snorkeling Activities in Chania, Crete

Snorkelling in Chania
Snorkelling in Chania is an ideal thing to do because:
  • All you need is a mask and a snorkel
  • Visibility in the seas of Chania is excellent and it is regarded as some of the best in the world. In summer, the average visibility is 30 or more meters
  • The water temperature in summer ranges from 22 to 27 degrees
  • There is a great variety of fish and sea-plants
  • There are no currents
  • The seabed in most beaches in Crete is rocky and this means a wider variety of sea life
Which beaches are the best for snorkelling?

Nestled on the picturesque island of Crete, the charming city of Chania offers an incredible array of experiences for travelers. While its historical sites, vibrant culture, and breathtaking landscapes captivate visitors, the city’s hidden gem lies beneath the sparkling azure waters of the Aegean Sea. Snorkeling enthusiasts will be delighted by the diverse marine life and stunning underwater landscapes that await them in Chania. So, grab your snorkel gear and let’s dive into an unforgettable adventure in this Mediterranean paradise!

For snorkelling the best beaches are in the south of Chania and my personal best are Paleochora and Kedrodasos.
You may also find great places in Kolymvari, Afrata and Kissamos in the north west of Chania.

What you should look for is a beach with a rocky seabed. Sealife in those beaches is increased opposed to sandy ones.

You must move away from the crowd. The fewer the people the best for snorkelling. Fishes do not like so much human sounds and crowdy places!

What time of the day is better for snorkelling?

The best hours for snorkelling is early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Those hours the sun is not at his full, so you may spend hours underwater.

Which month of the year is better for snorkelling?

September and October are usually better for snorkelling in Crete. Certain species move close to the shores during those months. Needlefish is such a species, and they approach the shores in September for reproduction. Their predators do the same too.

Tips
  • Move slowly when you see a fish and don’t move your hands as much as possible, you do not want to scare it away!
  • When you notice a fish hiding in a cavity, stand still and wait. Fishes are as curious as you and sooner or later they will come out and take a better look at the big ugly creature, who invades
    their privacy.
  • Feed them to come closer. Yes, a cookie or some bread will do the job. Try not to through it all at once, you want them to keep their interest for as much as you can!
